Death Race Mexico 2014 – Video

This is a great video of the Mexico Death Race that I participated in last month!  The folks over at Spartan Race Mexico did a great job putting this together.  Check out the video and get a taste of what we did.  If you look carefully you might catch a glimpse of me almost having a close conversation with one of the bulls.

The Burpee on TedX – Joe Desena Explains It All To You

The BURPEE has made it to the big-time intellectual party…TedX!

“Burpees are the ultimate exercise for humans.”

~ Joe Desena

Spartan Race co-founder (and mastermind behind the Death Race) Joe Desena talks at TedX Beacon Street about the virtues of the burpee, swimming pools, Big Evil and the burpee challenge he took on.

“What’s interesting about the swimming pool, it’s very much like the human body. The human body is 13 gallons of water on average, swimming pool typically is 20,000 gallons of water. If you were to take french fries and coffee and soda and all the things we eat on a daily basis then dump it into 20,000 gallons of water that pool wouldn’t do very well. It would turn green pretty quickly. But yet we expect our 13 gallon pool here to handle that. The other interesting thing about the swimming pool is…only the top 15% of the pool actually gets cleaned in most cases. And that’s like us going to the gym and going walking doing all these things we mostly call exercise. The burpee, on the other hand, rips the pool out of the ground, shakes it up, and gets every square inch of the pool clean.”

~ Joe Desena

Death Race Documentary “Beyond Limitations” Trailer

“Spartan Race is a baptism into this life…Death Race is an exorcism.”

~ Joe “The Grim Reaper” Desena

(Spartan Death Race Founder)

This past February, filmmaker Brandie Knight (Critical Mass Productions) was on location in Pittsfield, Vermont capturing the drama of the Winter Death Race for her upcoming documentary film on the Death Race, “Beyond Limitations”.  She plans on shooting more footage at the Summer Death Race in June and Team Death Race in September.

Oh, the humanity! I am reminded of the ABC Wide World of Sports opening montage quote: “…the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat.”  The Death Race promises lots of agony even for those that are able to finish.

Check out the trailer below for “Beyond Limitations”!  It is a pretty good representation of the 2013 Winter Death Race.  And, you get to see me taking a nice dip in near-freezing water!

To DNF is Human – Winter Death Race 2013

The Northeast is currently being clobbered by a record-setting blizzard.  Boston recorded 25 inches of snow last night, placing the storm in that city’s five-worst on record.  Good thing the 2013 Winter Death Race in Vermont took place last weekend!  I think.  Maybe not.  Maybe this weekend would have made for an even more epic and challenging event.  That’s how my sick mind works.  More snow?  Sure, bring it on!  Colder temperatures? Why not!  Harsher conditions?  Absolutely.  Higher possibility of failing?  Yup.

Burpees in our future.

And I did fail.  I DNF’d (Did Not Finish).  I dropped out.  I quit.  I did not collect my second Death Race finisher’s skull.

How To F*ck Up A Spartan Sprint Race

This coming weekend I will be running the Malibu Spartan Sprint…seven times. Not out of some masochistic desire to destroy my body.  Or some manly test of my bad-ass skills. Ha!  Nothing of that type of silliness.  Instead I will be doing seven laps of the course to raise money for my friend’s non-profit animal shelter From There to Care Animal Sanctuary.

S.E.R.E.-ious Business

Three months have passed since Death Race 2012 and although I have participated in a number of races and challenges in the time since my 62 1/2 hour ordeal in the mountains of Vermont I have been lazy about keeping up the blog.  All that changes now!  The remainder of 2012 looks pretty exciting and 2013 is shaping up to be quite a year!

First thing I want to write about is the S.E.R.E. Challenge – a great event put on by a very cool group of people.  I am already planning to take on a triple S.E.R.E. Challenge weekend next January in Arizona.  Your read that correctly.  A TRIPLE challenge…back to back to back.  So what IS the S.E.R.E. Challenge that I would want to kill myself three times in a row?  Read on!
